I felt the need to respond to an odd letter from Janet Lukac ("Stand Up for Beliefs," Oct 4) where she claims a "fear of believing in God [is] dictating our society." While offering no examples of her claim or where her personal feelings originate, she goes on to claim this country was founded on the words from the Pledge of Allegiance.
Those words were actually written in 1892 over 100 years after the founding of America. The allegiance has been changed four times since, including the addition of the words "under God" in 1954, a paranoid reaction to the ugly effects of McCarthyism. Where does this need for many Christians to play the victim come from?
The Christian religion dominates our society and yet so many act as if they are being persecuted and prevented from worshipping as they choose. Nothing could be further from the truth. Does she understand the first 10 words of the First Amendment she quotes in her letter?
