I do not know Nettie Gibson, but I was moved to tears by Ms. Gibson's plight as described in the Post-Gazette on Sept. 16 ("A Long Road to Recovery, Self-Discovery: Monroeville Woman Finds the Power to Forgive the Driver Who Struck Her Vehicle").
For 10 years I was a single mom raising my son until I married in 2004. "There but for the grace of God go I" was my first thought when I read this article.
When I came to this paragraph I was appalled: "Two weeks after Nettie Gibson returned home from rehab, her husband left her, she told the court. About a month after that, Mercy Behavioral Health System/Pittsburgh Mercy fired her, saying it could no longer keep her position open."
What a tragic irony for Ms. Gibson that her employer -- an organization whose mission is crisis management ... whose name promotes the act of "mercy" -- could be so heartless and cruel to one of its own. Where is the mercy for Ms. Gibson and her son? What kind of an organization would abandon an employee given these horrific circumstances that were clearly beyond her control? That Mercy Behavioral Health System/Pittsburgh Mercy is in compliance with regulations and laws, with respect to the firing of Nettie Gibson, is wholly unimpressive. As an individual, I do not need government regulations to guide me in doing what is right and just for another person. My guide is the Bible and the "mercy" God has shown me.
I implore Mercy Behavioral Health System/Pittsburgh Mercy to settle with Ms. Gibson and reinstate her to her former job if/when she is able to return to work.
I am praying that Nettie Gibson makes a full and speedy recovery and that Mercy will do the right thing for this courageous and admirable employee.
