Those who proclaim newspapers are headed to the scrap yard -- to be replaced by blogs, headline-gathering Internet sites and hourslong television reports of "breaking news" and "this just in" videos -- need to take a close look at the Post-Gazette's series on UPMC's expanding footprint ("Forging a Giant Footprint," Sept. 23-26).
The PG's coverage is an outstanding example of the important role played by newspapers and why they are so vital to a community and its people. Only a newspaper like the PG, using the depth of its writers, photographers, artists, designers and editors, can deliver this kind of journalism to the readers of Western Pennsylvania. Congratulations for the excellent work.
