Your Sept. 21 article "Voter ID Gets New Hearings for Next Week" quotes state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry: "As Mitt Romney said, 47 percent of the people are living off the public dole, living off their neighbors' hard work, and we have a lot of people out there that are too lazy to get up and get out there and get the ID they need. If individuals are too lazy, the state can't fix that."
Apparently, Mr. Metcalfe is in full agreement with Mitt Romney. Does he not see the irony in that statement? As a state representative, he is "living off the public dole, living off [his] neighbors' hard work." Where does he think his salary and bloated benefits come from? Is he so out of touch that he doesn't even know that we hard-working neighbors are paying for his living off the public dole? Mr. Metcalfe has just proved himself to be a hypocrite!
And in his reference to disenfranchised voters being too lazy to get the ID needed by this oppressive and unnecessary law, why doesn't Mr. Metcalfe volunteer his services in helping these neighbors? Other state representatives have offered to drive elderly or poor voters to the Pennsylvania license centers to acquire voter ID. Perhaps Mr. Metcalfe is too lazy? We know that he is not too busy, since the state Legislature was not in session at the time.
Spend a few hours waiting in line at a Pennsylvania license center with an elderly person in a walker or wheelchair, Mr. Metcalfe, and then you can comment on "lazy" people.
