My hero is an 89-year-old man. He left engineering school when he was drafted into the Army and landed in France after the Battle of the Bulge. When he came home, he helped his dad buy their first home (complete with indoor plumbing) with the help of the G.I. Bill.
He has been married to the same woman for 65 years, raised six children, scraped to make ends meet, sent five of those children to college, sold his war memorabilia in the 1970s so that he could send his wife to Spain and always made sure that the family went on a summer vacation.
His bride of 65 years has been suffering with Alzheimer's for close to six years, he refuses to put her into a care center and cares for her in their home. His days are mixed: Some days his wife doesn't know who he is, and other days he is fighting with the insurance companies to get her the meds that she needs.
When he served in the military, he loaded shells into a Howitzer cannon and his hearing is shot (no pun intended). The VA has provided him with state-of-the-art hearing aids.
My hero is my dad and he is part of Mitt Romney's 47 percent. Since my dad has retired, he has paid no federal income tax or payroll tax. My mom was a stay-at-home parent and has not paid federal income tax or payroll tax in over 60 years. Mitt Romney said they are victims. And Mr. Romney, you are wrong! You are wrong about my parents and the many others that you insulted and disenfranchised with your "off the cuff" remarks.
Mitt Romney is wrong about my parents, and he is wrong for America.
