Lornah Kiplagat sprints during a workout on the dirt track at Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Kenya. The stadium overlooks the Great Rift Valley, birthplace of the human race. Kiplagat set a world record at five miles in 1997 and at 20 kilometers in 2001. She has used her winnings on the international racing circuit to help young women follow in her footsteps or gain skills to get ahead in other pursuits. Next photo.
