Approved Trout Waters will remain closed to all fishing from today through 8 a.m. April 13, the statewide opening of trout season. Check the regs for the new waterways category, Approved Trout Waters Open to Year-Round Fishing. These waters are open to year-round fishing including March 1 through April 13, but no trout may be taken, killed or possessed during that period.
Lake Erie tributaries (Erie County): Steelhead continue to run and the mile creeks are open, but flow was erratic and angling pressure was light. Walnut and Elk creeks were high and dropping yesterday, with a 30-50 percent chance of snow showers and temperatures in the mid-20s through the weekend.
Allegheny River (Venango County): The state Fish and Boat Commission reports that with the temperature at freezing, pre-spawn walleye were active and angling pressure was highest at President, Reno, Fisherman's Cove and Dotter's Eddy. Harvest season for walleye and sauger closes March 15.
Piney Dam (Clarion County): Ice is uncertain and dangerous, but anglers reported catches of perch and walleye.
Kahle Lake (Clarion County): Bluegills, crappies and yellow perch were pulled through the ice, which was soft and unstable yesterday. Caution advised.
Neshannock Creek (Lawrence County): A pancake breakfast and trout stocking, an annual family event at Volant, is scheduled for Saturday. The Volunteer Firefighter's Sausage and Pancake Breakfast is open all day (adults $7, seniors $6, age 6-12 $5, children under 5 free). Kids are invited to help with the state stocking of browns at noon. A private stocking of lunker trout is scheduled for 1 p.m. March 9. Details 724-533-3212.
North Park Lake (Allegheny County): Angling pressure was light, but one fisherman reported catching two 10-inch trout from shore. A tanker truck meets at 1 p.m. March 5 at North Park Lake Boat House for a state stocking of rainbows.
Deer Creek (Allegheny County): A state stocking of brown and rainbow trout is scheduled -- meets at 12:30 p.m. today at Route 28 Natrona Heights exit.
Pine Creek (Allegheny County): The Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only stretch will get a state stocking of browns and rainbows -- meets at 12:30 p.m. today at Route 28 Natrona Heights exit.
Bull Creek (Allegheny County): A state stocking of browns and rainbows is scheduled -- meets at 12:30 p.m. today at Route 28 Natrona Heights exit.
Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): Ice conditions were unpredictable, but when solid anglers reported nice perch, crappies and brown trout.
Loyalhanna Lake (Westmoreland County): A tiger trout in the 14-inch range was reported. Tiger trout, brook-and-brown hybrids with curious stripes similar to that of a tiger, are sterile and rarely hatched in the wild.
Glendale Lake (Cambria County): Crappies, pike and perch were reported.
