Lake Erie and tributaries (Erie County): Wind off the lake posed a serious health risk, and falling in would almost certainly result in hypothermia. But anglers who braved the weather found a spike in flow Monday and Wednesday and active steelhead in lower Elk and Walnut creeks. On Sixteenmile Creek on Jan. 12-13, Pittsburgh angler Joe DeVita and two friends had more than 50 hookups, landing 22 steelhead weighing up to 12 pounds. Hot flies were Crystal Meth, Wooly Buggers and Sucker Spawn in white, pink and yellow. Solid ice on Presque Isle Bay attracted a scattering of huts, but significant catches were rare. Flurries predicted today and Saturday, and freezing rain and temperatures rising to 37 degrees were expected Monday.
Keystone Lake (Armstrong County): Several anglers caught medium-size crappies from shore.
Allegheny River (Armstrong County): The state Fish and Boat Commission reported catches of muskellunge 36 to 50 inches.
Crooked Creek Lake (Armstrong County): Anglers caught crappies in the outflow.
Yellow Creek (Indiana County): Skim ice melted off and much of the lake was fishable, but angler pressure was light.
Blue Spruce Lake (Indiana County): Ice cover broke, opening much of the 12-acre lake for trout fishing.
North Park Lake (Allegheny County): No ice, and one angler reported no competition on a day he caught two trout from shore. A state stocking of rainbow trout is scheduled Feb. 13.
Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): No one was seen fishing. The state plans to stock rainbows on the upper and lower lakes Feb. 13.
