When Michelle Weniger walked into North Allegheny's gymnasium after taking the job as Tigers girls' tennis coach a decade ago, she noticed all the banners North Allegheny's teams had won over the years.
She also noticed there were none for girls' tennis.
But in 2008, the Tigers won the PIAA Class AAA team title. And Friday, North Allegheny won its first WPIAL championship.
The Tigers swept singles and won No. 2 doubles to beat Shady Side Academy, 4-1, in the WPIAL Class AAA team championship at Sewickley Academy.
"After the match I texted our athletic director [Bob Bozzuto] and said, 'We get our banner,' " Weniger said.
The Tigers advanced to the WPIAL final in 1997, 2003, 2007 and 2008, but lost each time. In 2007 and 2008, Shady Side Academy was the team to end the Tigers' hopes of the WPIAL title. But after the WPIAL loss in 2008, North Allegheny got revenge a week later, defeating the Indians for the PIAA championship.
The Tigers got revenge again Friday, since it was Shady Side Academy that ended North Allegheny's season a year ago in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals.
"It was good to get a little bit of revenge for not doing as well as we wanted to last year," senior Maddy Adams said.
Adams and freshman twin sisters, Anna and Tina Li, swept the singles matches, in straight sets.
The Tigers also got a win at No. 2 doubles from Sydney Boyd and Catherine Zhang in two sets.
Shady Side Academy's lone point came at No. 1 doubles, when Liza Plakseychuk and Amanda Murphy won in three sets.
North Allegheny and Shady Side Academy qualified for the PIAA Class AAA team tournament, which begins Tuesday.
