In the WPIAL Class AA singles tournament last month, Greensburg Central Catholic sisters Michaela and Alyvia Kluska lost in the semifinals to Sewickley Academy's top two players.
Thursday in the WPIAL Class AA team championships, the Kluskas got their revenge.
Freshman Michaela Kluska defeated WPIAL singles champion Samantha Gohh in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and sophomore Alyvia Kluska beat WPIAL singles runner-up Sydney Miggantz in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), to help the Centurions win their first WPIAL girls tennis title since 1999 in a 3-2 victory against Sewickley Academy at Lakevue Athletic Club.
"We definitely wanted to win for our team, but we also wanted to come back and redeem ourselves from [WPIAL singles]," Alyvia Kluska said.
The matchups were reversed from the WPIAL singles tournament, where Gohh beat Alyvia and Miggantz beat Michaela, both in straight sets.
Greensburg Central Catholic got its third point at No. 3 singles, with Jordan Smithberger defeating Lauren Ritz, 6-2, 6-1.
The Centurions needed to sweep singles, because they only won one game in two doubles matches.
Two-time WPIAL doubles champions Jappman Monga and Amy Cheng of Sewickley won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles, and the Panthers' No. 2 doubles team of Sydney Joseph and Riley Roberts only lost one game in their match.
Both Greensburg Central Catholic and Sewickley Academy qualified for next week's PIAA Class AA state tournament, which begins Tuesday.
