Pitt wins opener at Big East Conference baseball tournament

Pitt (41-15) defeated St. John's, 10-2, in the first round of the Big East Conference baseball championship at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.

Junior Ethan Mildren (10-3) earned the win after pitching eight innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs -- one earned -- and striking out five. Mildren finished by retiring the final 14 batters that he faced. Sean Hagan (4-7) of St. John's (22-34) was the loser. Jon Danielczyk came in and recorded the final three outs for Pitt.

The Panthers will be back in action at 1 p.m. today when they face Notre Dame (32-23), a 5-0 winner against Seton Hall (36-18).
