The 2013 WPIAL soccer championships will be played with the Pittsburgh skyline as a backdrop.
The WPIAL and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds came to an agreement to stage all six championships -- boys and girls -- at Highmark Stadium, a new 3,500-seat stadium that sits near Station Square across the Monongahela River from Downtown.
Highmark Stadium's primary tenant is the Riverhounds pro soccer team. In the past, the WPIAL soccer championships have been played at high school venues. This year, two title games will be played Nov. 1 at Highmark and four Nov. 2.
Highmark also plans to stage an eight-week "High School Soccer Series" at the new stadium. Each week of the soccer season, Highmark plans to play host to one top boys and one top girls WPIAL soccer game.
Also, Central Catholic is close to finalizing a deal to play its home football games at Highmark.
