High School Baseball: Central Catholic rallies to win

P.J. DeMeo's father, Patrick, is a well-known surgeon and the Pirates medical director.

Thursday, the younger DeMeo gave the Central Catholic baseball team just what the doctor ordered.

DeMeo hit the tying two-run home run in the seventh inning as Class AAAA No. 2 Central Catholic scored three runs in the eighth to defeat host Baldwin, 9-6, in Section 3.

Central Catholic (7-1, 4-0) trailed Baldwin (3-6, 2-3), 6-3, after six innings.

The Vikings scored the winning run on a balk by a Baldwin pitcher. Alex Baretta and Sabatino DiNardo also homered for Central Catholic.

Other top baseball games

• Marcus Colella's two-hitter helped Class AAAA No. 3 Pine-Richland (8-1, 4-1) hand visiting Shaler (6-5, 4-1), its first Section 4 loss, 4-0. Pine-Richland's J.T. Riley hit a two-run single in the fifth.

• Zac Manuppelli pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and Alex Kiriloff had four RBIs for Plum (9-2, 4-1) in an 8-1 win at Franklin Regional (8-3, 3-2) in Class AAAA Section 3.

• Stefan Mrkonja's two-run homer in the sixth helped Class AAA No. 1 Hopewell (12-1, 5-0) bounce back from its first loss with a 6-4 win against visiting Central Valley (7-3, 2-2) in Section 1.

• Collin McCowin's two-run double in the seventh provided the win for Blackhawk (4-4, 3-2) in a 13-12 victory at Ambridge (4-5, 1-4) in Class AAA Section 1. Joe Campagna and Joe Campbell homered for Blackhawk.

• Class AAA No. 4 Hampton (9-1, 5-0) won its eighth game in a row with a 7-1 home victory against Highlands (3-4, 2-3) in Section 5. Ben Vey went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer for Hampton.

• Yough (5-6, 4-2) fought back from a five-run deficit to win at Mount Pleasant (4-6, 2-4), 9-8, in Class AAA Section 2. Brad Bisko delivered a two-run double in the sixth to provide the decisive run.

• Ian Sutherland went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Blaise McCarty added three hits to propel Class AA No. 1 Riverside (9-2, 6-1) to its sixth consecutive victory, 12-8, at Ellwood City (2-9, 1-6) in Section 5.

• Nick DiBucci was the winning pitcher and struck out 10 to lead Class A No. 2 Riverview (7-1, 4-0) to a 5-0 victory against visiting Springdale (3-5, 1-3) in Section 4. Riverview's Jake Paradise had two hits and scored two runs.

Three-homer game

• Sophomore Danziel Lewis hit three home runs and drove in six runs for Seton-LaSalle (4-5, 4-3) in its 20-9 six-inning victory against host Brentwood (0-5, 0-5) in Class AA Section 1. Seton-LaSalle's David Boehme went 5 for 5 with a home run and six RBIs.

Baseball top performers

• Freshman Jake Jessell pitched a complete game and went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to spark Woodland Hills (5-5, 3-2) to an 8-1 victory at Penn Hills (3-6, 1-4) in Class AAAA Section 4.

• Kittanning's Christian Miller went 2 for 4 and also hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to give the host Wildcats (2-7, 1-4) an 8-7 victory against Valley (1-7, 0-4) in Class AAA Section 5.

Top softball games

• Kayla Eberst's three-run homer in the fifth lifted host Baldwin (6-4, 5-4) to a 4-1 win against Class AAAA No. 5 Peters Township (12-3, 6-3) in Section 4.

• Olivia Gumbita pitched a one-hitter and Shelby Noel went 3 for 3 with a three-run homer to lead Class AAAA No. 2 Latrobe (9-1, 8-0) to an 11-0, six-inning win against Penn-Trafford (6-5, 4-4) in Section 1.

• Jen Rimmel went 5 for 6 with a home run and 6 RBIs for Bethel Park (6-3, 6-3) in a 22-14 Class AAAA Section 4 win against visiting Mt. Lebanon (3-5, 3-5).

• Lexie Ruzzi hit a two-run homer in the ninth to give host South Park (7-3, 6-3) a 5-3 victory against Yough (7-4, 5-4) in Class AAA Section 3.

• Meghan Gildea tossed a shutout as Brentwood (6-2, 5-2) ran its win streak to five with a 1-0 victory at Greensburg Central Catholic (6-3, 6-1) in Class AA Section 4.

• Class AA No. 3 Riverside (7-0, 7-0) tightened its Section 5 lead with a 4-1 win against visiting Mohawk (7-2, 6-2) as winning pitcher Kirsten Wilson threw a two-hitter and struck out 12.

• Candice Ashbaugh went 3 for 4 with three RBIs as host Riverview (6-3, 6-1) grabbed a 13-4 win against Vincentian (4-3, 4-3) in Class A Section 3. .

Softball top performers

• Knoch's Codi Reed and Bethany Hay hit grand slams in an 11-run ninth as the Knights (7-6, 3-4) rolled to a 19-8 win at Kittanning (3-5, 3-4) in Class AAA Section 5.

• Nicole Hall went 4 for 5 with 6 RBIs for visiting Jeannette (6-3, 4-2) in a 20-1, five-inning win against Springdale (1-7, 1-6) in Class A Section 3.
