High School Highlights: Gateway rallies to win Fox Chapel showdown

Gateway lost possession of the ball 23 times Tuesday night but in the end the Gators gained sole possession of first place in Class AAAA Section 2 with a 40-38 win against Fox Chapel in a section showdown.

No. 4 Gateway overcame 23 turnovers, a fourth-quarter deficit and an 18-point performance from visiting Fox Chapel's Matt D'Amico to break a tie atop the section.

Gateway (8-1, 5-0) moves into first ahead of Fox Chapel (9-2, 4-1), which had a 3-point shot at the buzzer fall short.

Other top boys games

• Class AAA No. 3 Beaver Area outscored No. 1 Chartiers Valley, 21-11, in the fourth quarter to spring an upset against the visiting Colts (8-1), 59-55, in a non-section battle of unbeaten teams. Aaron Barlow led the Bobcats (11-0) with 16 points.

• Joe Salmen scored 19 points to lead Class A No. 2 Union (10-1, 2-0) past No. 5 OLSH, 67-50, in Section 1. The visiting Chargers (9-2, 1-1) were paced by Cameron Johnson's game-high 20 points.

• Ryan Wolf scored 29 points to lift Class A No. 3 Vincentian (10-0, 2-0) past No. 1 North Catholic, 80-68, in Section 2. Dan Savulchak led the host Trojans (7-3, 1-1) with 30 points.

• Class AAA No. 2 Mars won a crucial Section 3 contest on the road with a 58-47 win against Indiana. The Planets (10-2, 4-0) were led by Owen Nearhoof's 16 points. Riley Stapleton paced Indiana (9-2, 3-1)with 15 points.

Star of the night

• Tyler Engle scored 17 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter to lead Blackhawk (5-6, 3-1) to a come-from-behind 55-53 win at Ambridge (5-5, 1-3) in Class AAA Section 2.

Milestone

• Upper St. Clair coach Danny Holzer won his 300th career game in memorable fashion as the Panthers (7-3, 4-1) won, 67-62, at Peters Township (4-7, 1-4) in double overtime. Holzer is 300-148 in 18 seasons at Upper St. Clair.

• Players who made six or more 3-pointers: Tyler Engle, Blackhawk, 9; Josh Jenkins, East Allegheny, 6; Evan Bonnaure, South Fayette, 6; David Urso, Central Catholic, 6; Sean Hennigan, North Allegheny, 6.

Top girls game

• The Gateway defense stifled Class AAAA No. 4 Fox Chapel (9-3, 4-1) on its way to a 47-26 win in Section 2. Katey Wilson led the host Gators (8-2, 5-0) with 12 points.
