![]() Flower Show Preview: Inspired by Orchids
Saturday, January 18, 2003
One bright spot in an otherwise bleak month is the opening of the annual orchid show, "Orchid Inspiration," at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Oakland. The exhibit opens today and runs through March 16.
This year, besides being able to view the stunning blossoms in the Orchid Room, visitors can see jewelry made from live orchids by Isaac Kornhauser, patio furniture with an orchid theme from Nunzia Pace, a dollhouse decorated with miniature orchids and a display of clay orchids done by Pamela Schultz. Also on hand will be a 5-foot-tall metal orchid sculpted by Butler resident Bill Secunda and a stained-glass orchid fashioned by Lorraine Merwick.
Every Saturday and Sunday during the show, educational programs will be offered, with topics ranging from "Native Orchids" to "Growing Orchids Under Lights." These programs are free with the price of admission. For a complete list of programs, dates and times, contact Phipps at 412-622-6914 or visit the Web site at www.phipps.conservatory.org.
Phipps is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; closed Mondays. Admission is $6 for adults; $5 for seniors 60 and over; $4 for students with current I.D.; $3 for children ages 2 to 12; free for Phipps members and children under 2.
