'Impressions' in full bloom

Saturday, March 17, 2001

Impressions" is the theme for Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens' Spring Flower Show, which opens today and continues through April 15. Phipps staffers used tulips, hydrangeas, lilies, narcissus and other flowers to re-create the color and beauty of impressionist paintings by Claude Monet and others.

Every Sunday during the show, classical music will be performed by local musicians in the Palm Court from 1 to 3 p.m. Local artists also will be on hand to paint their "impression" of the South Conservatory display during the weekends.

Show hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; closed Mondays. Phipps will stay open until 9 p.m. from March 23 to April 15. Admission: $6 for adults; $5 for seniors age 60 and over; $4 for students with current I.D.; $3 for children ages 2 to 12; free for children under 2.

Also, for those interested in recycling some of the bulbs used in the display in their own gardens, the Used Bulb Sale will held in front of the conservatory on Saturdays, March 31, April 7, 14 and 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. Each bag of bulbs sells for $4 while supplies last. Staff members will be on hand to answer cultural questions.
