Moon, the No. 2 seed in Class AA, won its sixth consecutive boys' soccer game, defeating Ambridge (13-4-3) in double overtime, 1-0, in a WPIAL quarterfinal at North Hills.
Dan Ros scored the goal for the Tigers (18-1-3) late in the second overtime. Senior sweeper Adam Lippencott, who earlier in the day had run in the WPIAL cross country championships at Slippery Rock, assisted on the goal.
"We knew Ambridge would give us trouble," Moon coach Arne Thomas said. "[They are] a good disciplined, defensive team.
"We pushed up the players to get more on offense in overtime. We were all over them, we just couldn't get one past them until the end."
Class AAA
Peters Township (19-2) had no problem defeating Hampton (12-8-1), 4-0, in the quarterfinals. Chris Wilcox led Peters Township with two goals. Indians goalkeeper Jordan Marks recorded his 13th shutout.
No. 1 seed Fox Chapel shut out Penn-Trafford (17-5), 3-0. Adam Janosko, Tim Dodson and Steve Warden scored for the Foxes (19-0). All three goals came in the first half.
Mt. Lebanon (15-5-1) beat Shaler in overtime, 2-1. Kevin Uranker scored both goals for the Blue Devils, the winner coming with 5:15 left in the first overtime. Jerry Dickinson scored for the Titans (18-2-1).
Class AA
Defending WPIAL and PIAA champion, Thomas Jefferson (15-7), beat Deer Lakes, 3-1, in a quartefinal. Rich Costanzo, a senior forward and Penn State recruit, scored the first goal for Thomas Jefferson. It was the 100th goal of his career. Brothers Evan and Ryan Browne scored the other goals for the Jaguars. Eric Ziencik scored the only goal for Deer Lakes (15-4-3).
Mars defeated Beaver, 3-1, at Fox Chapel. The Bobcats (17-3-2) scored 13 minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Planets (16-3-1) weren't worried after surrendering the first goal. "It's happened before," Mars coach Blair Gerlach said. "It settled us down, and we played a little harder. We came back and scored about 15 minutes later. That may have affected them more than their [goal] did to us." Steve Perri, Nick Perri and Evan Ring scored for the Planets.
Class A
No. 2 seed Trinity Christian (17-2) beat Neshannock in a shootout, 2-1, in a quarterfinal. The Lancers (12-5-1) struck first with a goal by Rob Bowan 32 minutes into the game and led at halftime, 1-0. Ben Sera tied the score for the Falcons 17 minutes into the second half, forcing overtime. Trinity Christian won the shootout, 4-2, with the deciding goal coming from Kurt Van Sickel. The Falcons have won 15 of their past 16 games.
Top-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic (18-1), defeated Serra, 5-2. It was tied, 2-2, at halftime before the Centurions scored three unanswered goals to claim the victory. Four players scored for the Centurions, with Ted Sarniak notching two. Serra finished 13-6-1.
Chartiers-Houston (18-2-1) beat defending WPIAL champion Seton-LaSalle, 3-2, in a shootout. The Rebels (15-3) held a 2-1 lead in the second half thanks to Rob Gielaroski's two goals. The Buccaneers' Tim Andy tied the score with 17 minutes left to send the game into overtime and ultimately to a shootout that Chartiers-Houston won, 3-1. This marked the first quarterfinal win in the eight years coach Jim Kita has been at the helm of the Buccaneers. They had lost in the quarterfinals three consecutive seasons.
Class AAA girls
Third-seeded Peters Township (19-1-1) edged Norwin, 1-0, in a quarterfinal. Leigh Sherratt scored the only goal with seven minutes remaining when she converted a rebound after Rebecca Rotoloni rang a shot off the crossbar.
