High School Highlights: Moon's rally tops Thomas Jefferson

Host Moon, ranked first in WPIAL Class AA boys' soccer, rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit to edge No. 2 Thomas Jefferson, 3-2, in overtime last night in a Section 3 showdown for first place. The loss snapped Thomas Jefferson's 29-game section winning streak.

Thomas Jefferson had not lost a section game since a 2-0 setback Oct. 10, 2000, at Quaker Valley.

John Morihlatko led the Tigers (6-1-1, 4-0) with two goals, including the sudden-death goal in the first overtime period. Dan Ros also scored for Moon on a penalty kick.

Rich Costanzo led the Jaguars (5-3, 3-1) with two goals, giving them a 2-0 lead early in the second half.

Top games

Fox Chapel, ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, needed overtime to win 1-0 and avoid an upset by Central Catholic in Section 3. Anirban Sahu scored the goal 2:15 into the second 10-minute overtime.

No. 2 Pine-Richland blanked North Allegheny, 2-0, in Section 2. Evan Picard and Randy Smith scored the goals.

Class AA No. 5 South Park (6-1, 5-0) was led by Mat Carver's three goals in a 4-1 triumph over Waynesburg (5-2, 3-2) in Section 5. Brian Smith scored the Eagles' other goal.

Undefeated Highlands (8-0, 4-0) rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit to defeat No. 8 Deer Lakes (6-1-1, 3-1-1), 7-4, in Class AA Section 2. Highlands, ranked third, was led by Greg Meyer with four goals and Billy Cook with two. Neil Duryea scored three goals for Deer Lakes.

Mt. Lebanon, ranked 10th, upset No. 7 Baldwin (7-1, 4-1), 1-0, in Class AAA Section 4. Kevin Uranker scored for the Blue Devils (5-3, 4-1) early in the second half.

David Blackwell's goal seven minutes into overtime led Riverview (4-4, 4-1) to a 1-0 victory against St. Joseph (3-4, 3-2) in Class A Section 2.

Monessen (4-3, 3-0) topped Charleroi (3-4, 2-1) for the first time, 4-3, in Class A Section 4. Dave Laurteri and Mark Stark scored two goals apiece for the Greyhounds.

Geibel topped Beth-Center (0-7, 0-3), 7-1, in a battle of previously winless teams. Andrew Laburda and Brandon Bailey scored two goals each for Geibel (1-5, 1-2) in the Class A Section 4 contest.

Star of the day

Hampton (5-3, 4-1) remained in the hunt for a playoff berth, defeating Seneca Valley, 3-1, in Class AAA Section 2. Jedd Cordisco scored all three Hampton goals, including two in the second half to break a 1-1 tie.

Field hockey

Sewickley Academy edged Vincentian, 1-0, in WPIAL Class AA on a goal by Wil Black.

Boys' golf

Zach Auhenbach led Central Catholic to a 198-202 victory against Penn Hills in Division I, Section 4 at Oakmont East. Auhenbach led the Vikings with a low round of 38, 3 over par.

Tyler Dice shot even-par 36 for Hampton as the Talbots downed Deer Lakes, 213-228, in Division I, Section 8 at Deer Run.

South Fayette ran its record to 8-0 with a 187-243 win against Washington in Division I, Section 4 at Hickory Heights. Jim Markovitz and Ryan Castanet were co-medalists for the Lions, shooting even-par 36.

North Allegheny (10-0) edged Pine-Richland, 192-193, in Division I, Section 3 at Diamond Run. The unbeaten Tigers were led by Alex Morse's par 35. John Brumberg shot 35 for the losing Rams.
