![]() Class AAAA / Quad South Conference
Wednesday, August 27, 2003 By Paul Zeise and Ken Mrazik, Post-Gazette Sports Writers
TEAM TO BEAT
Gateway -- The Gators won their first conference championship since 1988 and advanced to the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals last season. With 14 starters returning, this year's team appears poised and ready to win its first WPIAL Class AAAA title since 1986. Leading the way is quarterback Mortty Ivy (6-2, 200), a West Virginia recruit, and speedy running back Justin King. Ivy is capable of making big plays out of broken plays and should benefit from the addition of Central Catholic transfer Jai Wilson, a 5-9, 165-pound receiver.
CONTENDERS
Kiski -- The Cavaliers don't have Gateway's overall speed but are every bit as talented. The team is led by two Pitt recruits in running back-linebacker Scott McKillop and quarterback-defensive back Adam Gunn.
Penn-Trafford -- The Warriors feature perhaps the best offensive line in the conference. It is anchored by junior tackle Jason Kacinko (6-5, 290).
THE OTHERS
Franklin Regional -- The Panthers strong running attack is led by junior fullback Scott Uziel (6-4, 240).
Latrobe -- The Wildcats are led by senior quarterback Ryan Flynn, who is a three-year starter.
Plum -- The Mustangs figure to be in rebuilding mode as only seven starters return.
Indiana -- The Indians look to build on the momentum from winning two conference games last season.
