TEAM TO BEAT

Jeannette -- The Jayhawks again are loaded at the skill positions, but will have to replace some linemen if they are going to repeat as conference champs. The team does have an excellent guard in Anthony Matt (6-1, 230) to build around and Sean Stevenson (5-11, 240), Chris Errett (6-2, 230) and Tom McFadden (6-1, 255) are solid players as well. Tight end/defensive end Mike Dent (6-4, 240) is the team's impact player and junior quarterback Jordan Thomas (6-0, 185) had an excellent sophomore season. Thomas threw for 893 yards last year, but should put up even bigger numbers this year as the team has a talented receiving corps. The defense will be fast, aggressive and stingy.

CONTENDERS

Greensburg Central Catholic -- Centurions must replace some skill position players, but talented quarterback Greg Mroz returns and the team's lines are always strong.

Washington -- First-year coach Bill Britton inherits one of the best programs in the WPIAL. Will build around receiver/defensive back, Dale Calloway, a West Virginia recruit.

Waynesburg -- The Red Raiders will have a stout defense, but they must travel to Washington and Jeanette.

THE OTHERS

Southmoreland -- The Scotties have 13 returning starters and should be a playoff contender.

Brownsville -- Leading tackler linebacker Steve Pazzabon (6-0, 205) returns to lead the Falcons' defense.

Charleroi -- The Cougars have a new coach and not much experience. There could be some growing pains.

FIVE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Dale Calloway, Washington (WR-CB, 6-1, 185, Sr.); Mike Dent, Jeanette (TE-DE, 6-4, 240, Sr.); Jordan Thomas, Jeannette (QB-DB, 6-0, 185, Jr.); Kenny Evans, Washington (WR-CB, 6-0, 180, Sr.); Greg Mroz, Greensburg Central Catholic (QB-DB, 6-2, 175, Sr.).

GAME OF THE YEAR

Jeannette at Greensburg Central Catholic, Oct. 24.

BEST BAND

Southmoreland.
