When it comes to football conferences, the hierarchy of the WPIAL uses a nameless policy. But at the Post-Gazette, we didn't want Class AAAA to have John Doe conferences this season.
So bring up the lights and let us introduce you to 2006 Class AAAA football.
Northern Five: Butler, North Allegheny, North Hills, Seneca Valley, Shaler.
Big East: Fox Chapel, Gateway, Kiski Area, Penn Hills, Plum, Woodland Hills.
Foothills: Central Catholic, Connellsville, Hempfield, Latrobe, Norwin, Penn-Trafford.
Great Southern: Baldwin, Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, McKeesport, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair.
The WPIAL doesn't name conferences. It uses Section 1, 2, 3, etc. Over the years, media and school officials have named the conferences.
But the past few years, the conference names of Class AAAA made no sense. South Hills area teams Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Park were in the ... Quad North? East teams Gateway and Plum were in the ... Quad Southwest?
Plus, the WPIAL switched from three to four conferences in Class AAAA this season, so there had to be some different name-calling. School officials didn't do it, so the PG scholastic sports staff put their heads together with some members of the www.msasports.net staff to come up with the names.
"We've never named any conferences, so you can name them whatever you want, as far as we're concerned," said Tim O'Malley, the WPIAL executive director.
