Cole Chiappialle was a successful running back at Blackhawk High School, running for 404 yards in one game. But Chiappialle wasn't recruited by Division I colleges, so he decided to join Penn State's team as part of the Nittany Lions' "run-on" program, another name for "walk-ons."
Now Chiappialle is running on the field in Penn State games.
Chiappialle, a freshman, is playing special teams for Penn State and had a solo tackle in the Nittany Lions' victory against Michigan last Saturday. Chiappialle, listed on Penn State's roster as a running back, has three tackles in three games for the Lions (4-2).
• Branden Jackson, a graduate of McKeesport, is having a nice season for undefeated Texas Tech (6-0). Jackson, a defensive end, had five tackles, including 2 1/2 for losses, in a 42-35 victory against Iowa State last Saturday. He now has five tackles for lost yardage this year.
• Syracuse had a big win last Saturday against North Carolina State and handling the left side of the offensive line for the Orange is two Western Pennsylvania products. Franklin Regional graduate Sean Hickey is starting at left tackle and Rob Trudo of Farrell is starting at left guard.
