Cornelio Coates made a 27-yard field goal in overtime to give Perry a 9-6 victory against University Prep at Cupples Stadium on the South Side in the City League football championship game this afternoon.
Coates was an unlikely hero. He became Perry's kicker only last week.
The game was tied, 6-6, after regulation.
Perry scored first in the third quarter on Robert Willie's 9-yard touchdown run. But the extra-point kick was blocked.
University Prep tied it with 7:54 left in the game on Ryan Daniels' 4-yard touchdown run.
On the extra point, University Prep tried a trick play out of the "muddle huddle" when kicker Dan Denlinger took the snap and rolled to his right -- but his pass was intercepted by Chandler Houston.
In high school overtimes, each team gets a possession from the 10-yard line. If the score is still tied, the process is repeated.
University Prep took the ball first but failed to score after a sack and three incomplete passes.
Perry took over and three plays gained only 1 yard. That set up Coates to be the hero.
