North Allegheny has a 16-game winning streak against WPIAL teams, but that's not the only streak Seneca Valley hopes to break tonight.
Seneca Valley plays at North Allegheny in a key Northern Eight Conference game, and Seneca Valley heads into the contest with a nine-game losing streak to North Allegheny. Seneca Valley's last win was in 2002, and most of North Allegheny's wins during the streak have been blowouts. The Tigers (2-0 overall, 1-0 in conference) have outscored Seneca Valley, 259-78, in their past six meetings.
But Seneca Valley (2-0, 2-0) comes into the game with high hopes after scoring 74 points in the first two games. The Raiders are the Post-Gazette's No. 5 WPIAL Class AAAA team. North Allegheny is ranked No. 1 in both the WPIAL and state.
The game features two of the WPIAL's top quarterbacks. North Allegheny senior Mack Leftwich leads the WPIAL in passing yardage and is averaging 301 yards per game. He has completed 26 of 36 for 602 yards and six touchdowns.
Seneca Valley's Jordan Brown led the WPIAL in passing yardage during the 2011 regular season. In two games this year, Brown has completed 26 of 48 for 355 yards and six TDs, and also rushed 16 times for 161 yards. Seneca Valley also has a talented running back in Forrest Barnes, who ran for more than 1,000 yards last season and is a good receiver out of the backfield. Receiver Jon Dorogy and tight end R.J. McCauley also are big parts of the passing game.
But Seneca Valley's problems against North Allegheny have been mostly on defense. Over the past five years, Seneca Valley has given up an average of 46.6 points to North Allegheny and Seneca Valley lost at home last year, 49-28.
Besides Leftwich, North Allegheny also has Pat Kugler, a University of Michigan recruit who is ranked by some scouting services as one of the top offensive linemen in the country. Kugler also is a force on the defensive line. Gregg Garrity has been the Tigers' top receiver in the first two games with 11 receptions, and is averaging 18.9 yards per catch.
North Allegheny receiver-defensive back Brendan Coniker is being recruited by some Mid-American Conference schools. Junior receiver-defensive back Elijah Zeise, who has a scholarship offer from Pitt, did not play last week because of a shoulder injury, but is expected back for this game.
