WPIAL Class AAA: Capers, Chartiers Valley top West Allegheny, 28-24

Wayne Capers Jr. threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Matt Noczka with 21 seconds remaining to lead Chartiers Valley to a 28-24 win at West Allegheny in a non-conference opener. The Colts entered the season ranked No. 4 in Class AAA.

Capers, the son of former Pittsburgh Steeler Wayne Capers Sr., completed 8 of 12 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

Capers also connected with Beau Carson on a 47-yard scoring strike and ran for touchdowns of 48 and 5 yards.

West Allegheny took a 24-21 lead with 1:41 left on a 7-yard pass from Jared Buck to Emeka Agubata. Buck also threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Mike Caputo.

The Indians also scored on a 19-yard run by Caputo and a 38-yard field goal by Aaron Fleck.

Thomas Jefferson 38 H.D. Woodson 0

The three-time defending WPIAL champion Jaguars played host to H.D. Woodson, a school from Washington, D.C. and recorded a lopsided shutout. Ryan Ruffing rushed for 86 yards on 18 carries for the Jaguars and scored three times on runs of 3, 1, and 1 yards.

The No. 2 ranked Vikings opend with an impressive road victory against the Knights.

New Castle 20 Butler 14

Keith Keene rushed for 129 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Red Hurricanes to a victory against the Class AAAA Tornado. Keene scored on runs of 51 and 4 yards and on a 23-yard pass from John Matarazzo. Butler's Jacob Thompson scored on runs of 33 and 1 yard.

Belle Vernon 45 Laurel Highlands 17

Cory Williams and Matt Green each scored twice to lead the Leopards. Williams scored on a 1-yard run and an 89-yard kickoff return. Green scored on a 20-yard run and a 99-yard interception return. Williams led all rushers with 90 yards on 13 carries. Laurel Highlands was led by Carmen Congelio, who completed 8 of 21 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Elizabeth Foward 14 Yough 3

Greg Sotereanos rushed for 189 yards on 20 carries and scored on a 31-yard run to lead the Warriors. Corey Sevick also scored for the Warriors on a 1-yard sneak. Yough's only score came on a 28-yard field goal by Dan Moore.

Franklin Regional 48 Southmoreland 15

Chad Bowman ran for two touchdowns, while Steve Liberatore connected with Josh Staniscia on a pair of scoring strikes, as the Panthers beat the Scotties. Bowman rushed for 178 yards and scored on runs of 78 and 9 yards.

West Mifflin 35 Allderdice 0

Imir Sanders rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries and scored on runs of 1, 11, and 8 yards, as the Titans shut out the Dragons. West Mifflin also scored on a 4-yard run by Tyree Atkinson and an 8-yard run by Will Moody. The Titans held Allderdice to a minus 3 yards in total offense.

Hampton 21 Blackhawk 13

Phil Powell threw two touchdown passes, as the Talbots rallied from a 13-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Cougars. Powell connected with Michael Brode and Bill Young on scoring strikes of 16 and 22 yards. Hampton also scored on a 73-yard interception return by Steve Magister. Blackhawk scored on a 1-yard run by Zach Morrow and a 10-yard pass from Mat Brozich to Eric Richardson.

Mars 24 Moon 7

Austin Miele rushed for 160 yards on 26 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 8 yards to lead the Planets. Moon also scored on a 20-yard interception return by Josh Pinkerton and a 23-yard field goal by Chris Karns.

Uniontown 7 Connellsville 6

An extra point by Lucas Mosco was the difference, as the Red Raiders defeated the Class AAAA Falcons. Ron Skinner scored for Uniontown on a 3-yard run.
