The Skinny: A standout defensive lineman who has excellent quickness (has run the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds). Has been a starter since his sophomore season and had an excellent junior year.

College Talk: Mosley-Smith made a verbal commitment to Pitt in early July. He also had scholarship offers from Syracuse, West Virginia, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Ohio. He was recruited to play defensive line.

Woodland hills has been a little down the last two years. Will this year be different? It's going to be a lot different. We have a better team. Everyone is ready to go and focused.

Were you always a good football player? There was a point in time when I played in midget leagues that my dad made me play. I didn't like football then. I used to cry before games. I just wanted to play baseball.

Best player you've ever faced? Probably Canon-McMillan's Mike Hull.

Why the hyphenated last name? My mom and father wanted me to have both of their names so it's hyphenated. I get asked that a lot. But my father [Kendall Mosley] passed when I was 10 years old. He was murdered.

How hard has it been to grow up without a father? My mom has always been strict. That's what has motivated me more than ever. I have six other brothers and sisters, and I feel like I have to be the one to someday get my mom out of the struggle. That's one of the real reasons I wanted the scholarship. I'll be the first one in my family going to college.

Something you'd like to do someday? Play in the NFL.

What if that doesn't happen? I want to go to school for criminal justice, so I'd like to work in that area.

Favorite cereal? Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

• HOW MANY WINGS CAN YOU EAT? Oh, I don't know. A lot. Probably like 40.
