WPIAL runner-up Hampton came up short in its bid to get a rematch with unbeaten New Castle.
The Talbots (22-6) were eliminated Wednesday night in the PIAA Class AAAA second round, 58-50, by District 10 champion Erie Cathedral Prep (23-2) at Farrell.
The Ramblers were led by Sheldon Zablotny with 21 points. Zablotny made 9 of 10 free-throws. His other 12 points came on 3-pointers.
Hampton was led by the 6-foot-8 junior duo of Collin Luther with 22 points and brother Ryan Luther with 17 points.
Matt Harris and Conor Colpoys added 12 points each for Cathedral Prep who will meet WPIAL champion New Castle in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site to be determined. New Castle advanced with a convincing 57-46 victory against North Allegheny.
Hampton took a 15-9 lead, but trailed, 23-21, at halftime as Cathedral Prep ended the first half with a 12-2 run.
Cathedral Prep upped its lead to 41-34 after three quarters.
The Talbots rallied for a 45-44 lead midway in the fourth quarter before Cathedral Prep finished with a 14-5 run.
Class AA games
• Beaver Falls 53, Mercyhurst Prep 39: The WPIAL champion Tigers (25-3) overcame a sluggish first quarter to rout Mercyhurst Prep (18-9) in the PIAA second round at Sharon. Trailing, 8-2, eight minutes into the contest, Beaver Falls went on a 24-8 run in the second quarter to gain control at halftime with a 26-16 lead. Beaver Falls led, 40-24, after three quarters.
Six-foot-3 junior guard Elijah Cottrill led the Tigers with 27 points, the only Beaver Falls player in double figures. Cottrill scored 10 points in the pivotal second quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Cottrill also pulled downed 10 rebounds and made 7 of 9 free throw attempts.
Drew Cook, a 6-2 senior guard, also had a solid game for the Tigers with eight points and 11 rebounds. Carl Anderson led the Lakers with 13 points. Beaver Falls has won 15 games in a row heading into the quarterfinals Saturday at a site to be determined. The Tigers have won six consecutive postseason games.
• Lakeview 49, Greensburg Central Catholic 41: The Centurions (23-3) fell to District 10 runner-up Lakeview (23-4) at Sharon, losing for the second time in three games after riding a 14-game winning streak prior to an upset defeat to Burrell in the WPIAL quarterfinals.
The Centurions were led by junior guard Brian Graytok with 16 points, the only Greensburg Central Catholic player in double figures.
Senior guard Zach Herman, who came into the contest averaging 20.1 points per game, was held to seven points. Herman was 3 for 3 from the free-throw line but only made two field-goal attempts.
Greensburg Central Catholic led, 22-18, at halftime. The score was tied, 32-32, after three quarters before Lakeview outscored the Centurions, 17-9, in the final quarter.
