Girls' Basketball: Jeannette star scores 41 in victory

Steel Valley held WPIAL leading scorer Ciara Gregory in check in the first half as it built a seven-point halftime lead against No. 5 seed Jeannette.

But the Ironmen had no answer for the Jayhawks senior guard in the second half.

Gregory scored 31 of her 41 points over the final 16 minutes to lead Jeannette (16-6) to a 68-60 victory in a WPIAL Class AA first-round game at Fox Chapel.

No. 12 Steel Valley (15-8) built its first-half lead behind Sydney Smith, who had 12 of her 18 points before the break.

The Ironmen led by as many as 12 in the third quarter before Gregory heated up.

Gregory scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Jayhawks took a 46-44 lead into the fourth.

Then Gregory put the game away, hitting 9 of 10 free throws and scoring 19 points.

With the win, Jeannette advanced to play Deer Lakes Friday in the quarterfinals.

CeCe Dixon finished with 26 points for Steel Valley.

Class AA first round

• Greensburg Central Catholic 60, Beaver Falls 55: Carolyn Appleby scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half to help the No. 8 Centurions (17-6) rally from a 13-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to beat the No. 9 Tigers (15-9) at Canon-McMillan.

• Mohawk 45, Beaver 36: The No. 7 Warriors (17-6) led by 16 at halftime in their win against the No. 10 Bobcats (17-5) at Butler. Shelby Brown led Mohawk with 17 points.

• Deer Lakes 52, OLSH 43: Danielle Kearns had 15 points and 12 steals to help the No. 4 Lancers (20-3) advance past the No. 13 Chargers (19-5) at Hampton.

• Burrell 47, Carlynton 23: Sydney Bordonaro's 16 points helped the No. 3 Buccaneers (21-2) beat the No. 14 Cougars at Gateway (13-11).

• McGuffey 53, Riverside 38: Sophomore Sammie Weiss of the No. 6 Highlanders (20-2) scored 23 points to give her 1,021 for her career in a win against No. 11 Riverside (15-9) at Keystone Oaks.

• Bishop Canevin 65, Neshannock 28: Erin Waskowiak scored 31 points to lead the No. 2 Crusaders (19-4) past the No. 15 Lancers (12-12) at Moon.

• Seton-LaSalle 61, Washington 20: The No. 1 Rebels (22-1) led, 52-6, at halftime en route to an easy win against the No. 16 Little Prexies (13-11) at Peters Township.

Class AAAA first round

• Fox Chapel 45, Butler 36: The No. 8 Foxes (18-5) had four players score at least nine points, led by Alexas Yakich's 12, in a win against the No. 9 Golden Tornado (13-10) at North Allegheny.

• Mt. Lebanon 50, Franklin Regional 30: The top-seeded Blue Devils (21-2) outscored the No. 16 Panthers (11-13), 26-9, in the second half at North Hills to pull away for their 14th consecutive win.

• Gateway 55, Oakland Catholic 40: Katey Wilson led the No. 7 Gators (19-4) with 12 points in their victory against the No. 10 Eagles (9-14) at Baldwin.

• North Allegheny 56, Baldwin 33: The No. 2 Tigers (20-3) got 17 points from Taylor Brennan to beat the No. 15 Highlanders (11-12) at North Hills.

• Bethel Park 61, Norwin 31: Megan Marecic and Sami Simpson each scored 14 points to help the No. 3 Black Hawks (20-3) to a victory against the No. 14 Knights (13-11) at Woodland Hills.

• Penn-Trafford 50, Plum 40: Led by Taylor Cortazzo's 16 points, the sixth-seeded Warriors (19-4) beat the No. 11 Mustangs (17-6) at Woodland Hills.

City League semifinals

• Allderdice 57, Obama Academy 55: Sierra Fordham scored 25 points, the final two coming at the free-throw line with 40 seconds remaining, as the Dragons (12-12) upset No. 1 Obama (11-8) at Brashear.

• Westinghouse 60, Carrick 32: Led by Jasmine Myers' 21 points, No. 3 Westinghouse (15-9) advanced to the championship with a win against the No. 2 Bears (10-9) at Allderdice.
