Standout basketball player Geno Thorpe has left West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla., and returned to Shaler Area High School.
Thorpe, a Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 selection last season as a junior, had transferred to West Oaks for this school year because he wanted to live with his father, who resides in the Orlando area.
A Penn State recruit, Thorpe said he is not doing media interviews on why he left West Oaks, but confirmed through a text message that he is back at Shaler and will play for the Titans this season.
Elsewhere in district high schools, the WPIAL board of control had a meeting Monday to examine 74 eligibility cases and decided it will have future hearings with six student-athletes who have transferred schools. One of them is Yacine Diop, a talented girls basketball player who transferred to Seton-LaSalle from Oak Hill Academy (Va.).
The WPIAL will also have a hearing with 6 feet 8 junior Elijah Minnie, who played at Monessen as a freshman, Summit Academy as a sophomore and is now at Lincoln Park. The league also will have hearings with two other basketball players -- Lincoln Park's Maverick Rowan and Ambridge's Malik Walker, who left Ambridge, transferred to Lincoln Park, and then came back to Ambridge.
The other hearings will be with Karly Mellinger, who went from Greensburg Central Catholic to Greensburg Salem, and Milan Smith, who went from Imani Christian to Gateway. Smith is the son of Imani Christian football coach and athletic director Harvey Smith.
