High School Baseball: Big Macs capture Section 5 crown

With a chance to win the WPIAL Class AAAA Section 5 baseball title, Canon-McMillan didn't waste any time jumping on Peters Township.

Frank Fortunato and Buzz Boggio each had two-run doubles as part of 10-run first inning for the host Big Macs (11-6, 8-2) in a 14-11 victory.

It was the seventh consecutive win for Canon-McMillan.

Peters Township (11-6, 5-5), the 2011 WPIAL runner-up, will miss the playoffs for the second season in a row.

Other top baseball games

• Matt Carter went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs to help Shaler (10-7, 8-2) tie for the Class AAAA Section 4 title with an 8-7 home victory against No. 3 Pine-Richland (14-3, 8-2).

• Luca Farina had a two-run single in the sixth inning to help No. 5 Central Catholic (14-3, 9-1) rally past visiting Baldwin (5-10, 4-6), 4-3, in Section 3.

• Stefan Mrkonja threw a one-hit shutout in a 5-0 win for Class AAA No. 2 Hopewell (16-2, 8-1) against host Ambridge (9-7, 4-6) in Section 1.

• Trent Ream went 3 for 4 and scored three runs to help Indiana (14-3, 10-2) clinch the Class AAA Section 2 title with a 14-9 win against Derry (8-6, 7-4).

Baseball top performer

• Senior Anthony Malky allowed one hit and struck out 14 in five innnings to lead Class A No. 3 Riverview (12-2, 7-1) past Springdale (5-7, 3-5), 14-1, in Section 4.

Top softball game

• Shelby Noel pitched a four-hitter to help Class AAAA No. 2 Latrobe (13-3) beat Pine-Richland (9-5), 2-0, in non-section play.

Softball top performer

• Senior pitcher Hannah Smith struck out 10, hit a home run and drove in three runs to help Class AAA No. 2 Ambridge (11-2) to a 10-1 non-section win against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-3).
