Before this season, Canon-McMillan had never advanced past the WPIAL softball semifinals.

The Big Macs won their first WPIAL championship last week -- but they're not done yet.

Freshman Abby McCartney homered and Giorgiana Zeremenko had three hits as Canon-McMillan defeated District 10 champion Erie McDowell, 4-1, in a PIAA Class AAAA first-round tournament game Monday afternoon at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Township.

McCartney went 2 for 3 with three RBIS, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Tera Schram added a run-scoring single for the Big Macs (17-5), who have won seven in a row and 10 of their past 11.

Alayna Astuto pitched a 1-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

Quarterfinal games in all four classifications are scheduled for Thursday.
