Science Editor Byron Spice, 45, has spent the last six months researching and writing "Reading the Book of Life," conducting scores of interviews and traveling to several states in the process. For the past 10 years, Spice has edited the Post-Gazette's weekly Science & Environment section and coordinated daily coverage of science, medicine and the environment. A graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., Spice worked at the Albuquerque Journal and the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette before coming to Pittsburgh. He has received numerous awards, including a Golden Quill for science, health and technology reporting, and a national American Association for the Advancement of Science/Westinghouse science journalism award.

Staff Photographer Matt Freed, 28, joined the Post-Gazette 5 1/2 years ago. In the past year alone, he was named runner up in the Pennsylvania Press Photographers Association's Photographer of the Year contest; received an award of excellence from the National Press Photographers Association for a sports picture story; and a first place for a sports picture story from the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. Freed attended Point Park College, and worked at the Spirit in Punxsutawney before joining the Post-Gazette. His last major photo project was this spring, on the rock band The Clarks, in the Sunday Magazine.

Staff Artist James Hilston, 35, joined the Post-Gazette in 1998 after working for advertising agencies and for the Youngstown Vindicator.
A magna cum laude graduate of Youngstown State University, Hilston specializes in informational graphics and design for the Post-Gazette. He has received numerous awards for his work, including a second place this year in graphics/photo illustrations in the statewide Keystone Press Awards.
