Earth Day has grown so big that environmental activities now spread over the entire week. The following is a sampling of events where the wearing o' the green is appropriate:
Tomorrow
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- Slippery Rock University Earth Day Celebration sponsored by the Community Service-Learning Institute, including displays and information on recycling, energy conservation and other environmental issues. Contact Ezgi Bilici, 724-738-2273.
Thursday
4 to 6 p.m. -- Critical Mass Bike Ride, to promote alternative forms of transportation, starting at the University of Pittsburgh Student Union Patio on Bigelow Boulevard between Fifth and Forbes avenues in Oakland.
Noon to 1 p.m. -- "The Current and Future Status of Renewable Energy in Pennsylvania," a talk by Bill Hopwood, CEO of Springhouse Energy Systems and PennFuture board member, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Room G-12.
Saturday (Earth Day)
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. -- The Sierra Club, Allegheny Group, will celebrate the 30th Earth Day at Frick Environmental Center, Frick Park, with informational displays by two dozen environmental groups, discussions, nature walks, family activities and tree plantings in Frick Woods Nature Reserve. Noon to 3 p.m. -- Globalize This!, a festival dedicated to environmental and humanitarian ideas sponsored by Pittsburgh Grassroots Globalization Network, in Mellon Park, Fifth and Shady avenues. Festivities include speakers, musicians, food.
6 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- Earth Day at the Zoo with WYEP. The public radio station will broadcast live all day from the zoo where there will be activities, demonstrations and representatives of earth-friendly organizations. For more information, call 412-665-3640.
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. -- Earth Day at the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania's Todd Sanctuary, Butler County, including planting and earth stewardship activities. Call Trisha Harger for details at 412-963-6100.
9 a.m. to 7 p.m. -- The Art of Re-use, sponsored by Construction Junction, a recycling center for building and remodeling materials, located underneath the 62nd Street Bridge in Lawrenceville. 7 p.m. -- Earth Day Celebration Concert at CMU. Featuring Yves Jean Band and Lis Harvey Band, on Main Lawn at Carnegie Mellon University. Sponsored by the Earth Group at CMU.
