The stratospheric flight of Team Re/Max and the flight of the Virgin Global Challenger are only two around-the-world balloon flight attempts slated in the coming months.
The other ATW challengers include the Breitling Orbiter, piloted by the Bertrand Piccard, Wim Verstraeten, and Anthony Brown; the Spirit of Peace, piloted by Jacques Sokup, Crispin Williams, and Mark Sullivan; World Quest piloted by Dick Rutan and Dave Melton; South Africa's Global Conquerer; and Chicago architect Kevin Uliassi and his balloon J. Renee (named for Uliassi's wife).
Flight plans, balloon names, and crews tend to shift as sponsors sign on and sign off. With the stiff competition, crews tend to be secretive about specific launch dates Check the following Web sites for up-to-date information.
