The Fred Rogers Co. has released a new compilation of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" episodes and extras that supports children with autism in social and emotional learning.
Called "Friends and Feelings," the DVD features episodes that include "It's Very Hard to Wait," "Ups and Downs of Friendship," "Learning About Sharing" and "Learning Self-Control."
Through talking, singing and playing, Mr. Rogers and his friends and neighbors work on skills such as waiting, helping, asking for help and sharing and practicing being flexible, managing frustration and anger, and thinking about the feelings of others.
The DVD also features introductions -- from a developmental psychologist, a children and adolescent psychiatrist, a special education consultant and a social skills therapist -- that help parents and professionals more intentionally and actively watch and use media to support their children.
The Fred Rogers Co. is collaborating with 20 autism service organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania to distribute more than 12,000 copies of the DVD for free. It will also soon be available as a DVD or a download from Amazon.com.
"Friends and Feelings" was made possible by a grant from the FISA Foundation with additional support from the Hafner Charitable Foundation and Darlington Charitable Trust.health
