A program to educate consumers about the intricacies of the Medicare system and long-term care will be held May 7 at the Benedictine Senior Center in Ross.
Allegheny County APPRISE is partnering with the senior center on the free event, designed to answer questions from people who receive Medicare or are about to qualify for it. Financial, legal, medical and insurance issues are among the topics to be covered.
Details of the Medicare system can be especially overwhelming for people who are new to it, noted APPRISE volunteer Regina McCormick.
"There are lots of intricacies that are not well defined, or maybe it's too much to absorb at any one time," she said. "What we want is for these people to come and hear and take home printed information such as who to contact, when to contact them and how to contact them."
Attendees will be guided on practical steps to create a long-term health care strategy that suits their individual needs.
The event at the senior center, located at 4530 Perrysville Ave., starts with registration at 1:30 p.m., followed by presentations at 2 p.m. Attendees are urged to register with the senior center ahead of time by calling 412-931-6051.
Pittsburgh is the designated host city for the 2011 National Veterans Wheelchair Games, and the designated co-hosts are VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and the Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Veteran athletes compete for Olympic-style medals in 17 sports such as quad rugby, archery, power soccer and weight-lifting in the annual competition co-sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America. The games are the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world.
The games, which promote rehabilitation among veterans who use wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries, amputations and neurological diseases, also include exhibition and entertainment events.
The local co-hosts are hoping to raise money to offset the cost of the event. More than 2,000 volunteers are needed to help with aspects of the competition ranging from transportation to water distribution to meals.
This year's games will be held July 13-18 in Spokane, Wash.
