Alcoa Inc., the aluminum giant headquartered here, has donated $2 million to assist victims of last week's terrorist attacks.
In addition, the company has pledged $1 million in matching money for any employees or retirees who donate to accredited relief agencies serving New York City, Washington, or families of attack victims.
"As events unfold, it is our intention to apply these funds to the areas of greatest need," said Alcoa Chairman Alain Belda.
Immediately after the attacks, Alcoa gave $75,000 to the American Red Cross for water and supplies.
Alcoa's gifts are some of the largest made to relief efforts by a locally based corporation.
Nationally, several companies and organizations have donated $1 million or more to various relief funds.
The largest gifts recorded by the United Way's Sept. 11th fund are $10 million each from the Lilly Endowment and Microsoft Corp., $5 million from IBM Corp. and $4 million from United Parcel Service.
The American Red Cross also recorded a $10 million donation from the Lilly Endowment, plus $6 million from the Coca-Cola Co. and $3 million each from the pharmaceutical company Novartis and from Sony Corp.
