The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mails a letter to each household with children under 12 who are receiving monetary assistance from the Department of Welfare. In an average year, over 10,000 letters are mailed that assist over 17,000 children. These families are asked to register with their local Salvation Army in October to be able to receive toys during the holiday season.
The Marines' Toys for Tots program also provides toys for groups who serve underprivileged children. The Marines and the Post-Gazette's Goodfellows Fund are teaming up with Pittsburgh Cares this year to make sure all kids age 12 and under will receive toys during the holidays. Families who otherwise cannot afford toys can visit the Toys for Tots open house:

Location: Point Park University, Lawrence Hall, Wood St. and Boulevard of the Allies, Downtown
ID needed: Those wishing to obtain toys should by accompanied by their children or bring documentation of the children's ages (for example, birth certificates or insurance cards) and proof of government assistance.
