Bernhard Langer and Tom Pernice Jr. each shot 6-under 66 Friday to tie for the first-round lead at the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.
Langer, who holed out a bunker shot to win this even in a playoff in 2010, birdied three of the final four holes at Broken Sound.
Defending champion Corey Pavin, Roger Chapman, Fred Funk, Scott Simpson and two players making their Champions Tour debuts -- Greensburg native Rocco Mediate and Bart Bryant -- were a shot back after 67s.
Brandt Snedeker goes into the weekend at Pebble Beach with another chance to win, this time without golf's biggest stars in his way. Snedeker played bogey-free at tough Spyglass Hill for a 4-under 68, giving him a share of the lead with Ted Potter Jr. (67) in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California. Hunter Mahan (69) was among those one shot behind.
• Trevor Fisher Jr. shot a 9-under 62 and Richard Sterne had a 65 to share the lead at 15 under after the second round of the Joburg Open in Johannesburg.
The Arizona Diamondbacks and second baseman Aaron Hill reached a deal that will keep him under contract through the 2016 season. The deal adds three years and $35 million to his existing deal, which pays him $5.5 million this year. That means the overall contract is worth $40.5 million over the next four years.
• The St. Louis Cardinals and 2011 World Series MVP David Freese reached an agreement on a one-year contract that avoids salary arbitration. Terms were not disclosed.

Olympic champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany won the super-combined title at the world championships in Schladming, Austria. Hoefl-Riesch was fourth after the downhill portion before posting the second-fastest time in the slalom to finish in 2:39.92. She beat Tina Maze of Slovenia by 0.46 seconds.
The Pittsburgh Power announced that Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor will be a part of radio broadcasts for the Arena Football League season. The Power's first game is March 23 against the Utah Blaze at Consol Energy Center.
