Home & Garden Notes: Collection to accept hard-to-recycle items

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, polystyrene packaging materials and other hard-to-recycle items will be collected in the parking lot of Steel City Motorcycle, 1375 Washington Road (Route 19 and Racetrack Road), Chartiers, Washington County.

The Pennsylvania Resources Council will also accept at no charge e-waste, including computers, printers, monitors, fax machines, laptops and televisions, cell phones, printer/toner cartridges and compact fluorescent bulbs. A small fee will be charged for dropping off batteries, fluorescent tubes, small Freon appliances and paper for shredding.

This is the first time the PRC will collect polystyrene, the hard white molded packaging material often used to protect consumer electronics and household appliances during shipping. The Appliance Warehouse, 523 Bingham St., South Side (15203) accepts polystyrene year-round. Call 412-381-8800 before dropping off.

Other hard-to-recylce collections will be held at the City of Pittsburgh Environmental Services/Strip District on Aug. 17 and The Mall at Robinson on Oct. 5.

Southern Butler garden tour

Six Cranberry area gardens will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday for the Southern Butler County Garden Tour.

Tickets, $20, will be available from 9 to 10 a.m. next Saturday at the Cranberry Municipal Building or by mailing a check payable to Southern Butler County Garden Club to: Belinda Stuetelberg, 143 Pinehurst Drive, Cranberry PA 16066.

Proceeds benefit club projects and local horticultural programs.

Verona garden tour

The Verona Open Gardens Tour will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday. This is a free self-guided walking tour of local gardens and the Granary, a historic landmark on the Allegheny River now occupied by urban archaeologist Christine Davis, who will be on hand to speak about the building.

Maps will be available at the corner of Allegheny River Boulevard and South Avenue. Balloons will mark the participating homes. Refreshments will be served at various locations.
