Jacquie Rickets is known as "The Flower Lady" in her Ross neighborhood. Right now her driveway is filled with perennials dug from her garden. She's selling them to help a friend who has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.
She's known Debbie Kolarik Belling since the two were buddies in high school together at North Hills in the late '70s.
The two lost touch after high school, but were reunited by chance through work at Shannopin Country Club where Ms. Rickets is banquet manager.
Ms. Belling has battled the disease for nearly five years and is undergoing chemotherapy.
Ms. Rickets has beautiful hybrid iris and daylilies to sell. She's also digging coreopsis, shasta daisies, coneflower and others.
All she asks is a donation for the plants. All the funds will go to help Ms. Belling with her expenses.
"It's just a way to make Debbie's life a little easier," says Ms. Rickets.
The plants can be purchased directly from Ms. Rickets by calling her at 412-370-8135. They can also be found at Vivo Restaurant in Sewickley and The Enchanted Olive in Harmony. Donations can be dropped off or sent to West View Savings Bank, 572 Lincoln Ave., Bellevue. Write "Flowers for Debbie" on the check memo. Plants are also available at the bank and Ms. Rickets plans on selling them locally at farmers markets.
