The Bethel Park girls volleyball team gave defending PIAA champion Landisville Hempfield all it could handle in a Class AAA semifinal Tuesday at Altoona High School, but the Black Hawks fell short of earning the school's first title-match berth.
"We matched them point for point in the first set and lost, 27-25," Bethel Park coach Shawn Palmer said.
"If we could have pulled out that victory, it would have been completely different."
Bethel Park jumped to an 8-4 lead in the second set, but Landisville Hempfield rallied for a 25-19 victory. Landisville Hempfield, the District 3 runner-up, capped its sweep with a 25-18 third-set win.
"It's disappointing to have the season end like this, but, overall, I'm very proud of what these girls have accomplished," Palmer said. "This is the first team in Bethel Park history to play in the PIAA semifinals."
Stacey Kazalas led Bethel Park with 19 kills, while Olivia Schanck contributed 12 kills and 11 digs. Sarah Storino had 27 digs.
Landisville Hempfield will have a rematch with District 3 champion Cumberland Valley in the PIAA title match at 3 p.m. Saturday at Central York. Cumberland Valley earned its fourth title berth in a row with a 3-2 win against Southern Lehigh.
