Pittsburghers don't like to brag.
That's probably understating things.
In fact, Pittsburghers loathe boasting. Sure, it's OK to be proud of our ethnic roots and sports teams, but when it comes to the region and its employers, disdain is often the name of the game.

It's time to rethink that.
This second annual Top Workplaces section challenges our misconceptions about what it means to work in Western Pennsylvania. Turns out there are some impressive employers out there.
Reading the comments from employees shows what human resource experts have known for a while: It's not the extra things that make employees value their jobs; it's things like leadership, career development and communication.
The workplaces that strive for excellence have earned this recognition.
In our second year of publishing the Top Workplaces section, there are many familiar names on the list, but new ones, too.
The list, like our region's economy, is dominated by employers in the medical and educational sectors. But there also are a large number of charitable nonprofits on the list. The professional and retail sectors also are well represented.
Missing from the list are most manufacturers and many of the region's heavy hitters, whose names appear most regularly in the news. Primarily, that is because they chose not to participate in the survey by the Post-Gazette's research partner, WorkplaceDynamics, which calculated the list of top workplaces.
We're hoping that changes next year and more employers step up to be recognized for making Pittsburgh not just one of the best places to live, but one of the best places to work, too.
