Today remains one of my favorite days Downtown:
Opening day at the Market Square Farmers Market.
The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today through October.
It was bigger and better than ever on the reconfigured Market Square last year, and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership that organizes it promises that it will be even bigger this season, with four new weekly vendors -- Edible Earth Farm (organic produce), The Olive Tap (olive and other oils), Out of the Fire Cafe (smoked salmon, hummus, mushroom soup) and Simmons Farm (produce).
These added to 20 returning weekly vendors, plus a few who will occasionally appear, including The Pittsburgh Pie Guy.
There will be concerts each Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and special events, such as today's giveaway, by The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, of 6,500 tulip bulbs recycled from Downtown planters (three-dozen limit, suggested donation of 1 cent per bulb, until they're all gone).
The Downtown one is just one of scores of farmers markets and farm stands that bless this region.
We're happy to once again present the region's most comprehensive and up-to-date list of them.
A couple have closed -- including markets in Bellevue and Scott and, alas, the one-day one at Buffalo Church in Sarver -- but we've been delighted to find out about new markets, too, in Chippewa, Hempfield and West Newton. We've marked them on the list as new.
Other markets have new locations -- such as Harmony's, which has moved to Zelienople to form the Zelienople-Harmony Farmers Market -- or are moving back to former locations, and others have new hours and/or days, all of which we've updated here. We've also marked the ones that accept credit/debit cards and electronic benefits transfer, or EBT.
This year, we count 130-plus farmers markets and farm stands, from Eastern Ohio to State College, and from Erie to northern West Virginia.
We're printing the list so you can keep it, but you'll be able to find it all season long, along with a spiffily updated interactive map, at post-gazette.com/food.
If we missed your market, just contact us and we'll add you to the list and map, which we'll keep updated right up to Thanksgiving.
