The 2013 Emmy Awards red carpet was awash in Golden Age glam with modern twists and a rainbow of bold colors, punctuated by choices of all-over blush, white or black. It was a night when the only risk was not to take one, whether it was an oxygen-depriving fit or a color that could be spotted from the International Space Station.
The column silhouette was seen up and down the carpet, occasionally offset by a fishtail or mermaid bottom, and some of the stars took it two tone, including "Veep's" Julia Louis-Dreyfus in one of the few sparklers of the night, a beaded gown by Monique Lhuillier, and "Breaking Bad's" Anna Gunn with an asymmetrical black lace top and blush-colored bottom by Romona Keveza. Carrie Preston ("The Good Wife") chose a similar color scheme but with a simple black outline. Also looking sleek in a blond blunt cut and black and white Andrew Gn princess gown was "Mad Men's" Elisabeth Moss.
Keveza was having a night, dressing Ms. Gunn and Carrie Underwood, who wore purple, one of the rich jewel tones that made a repeat appearance. Also on trend was Allison Williams' royal blue classic gown by Ralph Lauren and Tina Fey's custom blue halter by Narciso Rodriguez. There was the deep red and maroon ball gown worn by "Downton Abbey's" Michelle Dockery. Among many shades of purple on the red carpet, Alyson Hannigan of "How I Met Your Mother" wore Marchesa, and Melissa Rauch of "The Big Bang Theory" wore Rubin Singer.
Side swept or center part '30s and '40s hair was in evidence and seemed to have inspired the waves of dramatic draping on the Donna Karan Atelier purple confection worn by Linda Cardellini, the "Mad Men" guest star who has come a long way since "Freaks & Geeks." Julie Bowen ("Modern Family") also brought the glam in a light pink form-fitting mermaid gown by Zac Posen.
Kerry Washington ("Scandal") wore Marchesa -- white with whimsical flower embellishments -- while "Girls" co-stars Lena Dunham in a floral Prada and Zosia Mamet in a custom-made Honor gown went for unflattering prints, a break from the many solids or head-to-toe lace or tulle worn by Kaley Cuoco ("The Big Bang Theory") in Vera Wang, Emily Deschanel ("Bones") in a custom vegan gown by Houghton and Laura Dern ("Enlightened") in Naeem Khan. (Was Ms. Dern just off the Pittsburgh set of "The Fault in Our Stars"?)
For a contrast in glamour but still working it like old Hollywood, you need only look at "Mad Men's" Jessica Pare in an ankle-baring aqua dress by Oscar de la Renta and "Homeland's" Claire Danes in a barely there lace and beaded number by Armani Prive.
Jon Hamm's ("Mad Men") scary beard aside, the guys were mostly sedate -- even Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") wore a subtle black lace print tux -- and the bow tie was definitely the finishing touch of choice. Zachary Quinto ("American Horror Story") was among the exceptions to the rule, choosing black on black with gray trim and a gray tie.
