Janet Collins: To Dance Is To Live
WQED Studios  [ venue info ]
11/5/2009 6:30pm

Local filmmaker M. J. Washington will be present for this screening of her 2009 film biography of the first African American prima ballerina.

Janet Collins (1917-2003) was among the pioneers of black ballet dancing and set the way for others to follow. In 1951 she won the Donaldson Award for best dancer on Broadway for her work in Cole Porter's "Out Of This World". She also did "Aida", "Carmen" and was the first Créole ballerina at the Metropolitan Opera.

Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. A portion of the proceeds benefit Visionary Performing Arts Academy, which provides students from all economic classifications with quality dance training, at an affordable cost, while building self-confidence and promoting individuality, commitment and discipline. For additional information, please phone (412) 638-0823.
