-Riding the "T" up to Mellon Arena, we spotted this Joe Mullen jersey:
-They're grilling burgers and hot dogs outside:
-Despite scattered showers, the lawn outside Gate 3 is packed:
-The Flyers get their Pele on before the game:
-If you're reading along, hit us up at email@example.com.
Other jerseys we have seen:
(Considering how big that thing is on that kid and the fact it's a Bryan Smolinkski jersey, we assume that's a hand-me-down.)
(A rare find.)
A couple of brave souls have ventured from the "wrong" side of the state:
(If you're going to wear a Flyers jersey, wear one that you can actually take pride in buddy.)
We took a picture of the Penguins warming up:
And we took a picture of Jeff Jimerson contemplating something amusing:
-The Penguins have scratched Gary Roberts, Dany Sabourin, Darryl Sydor, Kris Beech and Jeff Taffe.
-Kimmo Timonen will play. He was announced as a starter.
-Braydon Coburn is among the Flyers' scratches. The others are Stefan Ruzicka, Ryan Potulny, Jaroslav Modry, Steve Downie, Nate Guenin, Riley Cote, Denis Tolpeko, Kyle Greentree and Scott Monroe.
-It got dark in here:
-Marc-Andre Fleury comes screaming out of the tunnel and smoke:
Jimerson does what he does best:
18:03: Jordan Staal drives up the left side and pumps a slapper on net. Martin Biron easily gloves it.
17:42: Hard work by Maxime Talboyt pays off. He steals the puck off the Flyers and tries to dish it into the slot. Mike Knuble hauls him down and is sent off for hooking.
17:30: Marian Hossa slides the puck to the point. Sidney Crosby takes it, winds up and sends a fake pass to Ryan Malone to the left of the net. The puck deflects off Malone's right skate and goes into the net. A brief video review confirms the goal. The "Hey Song" is played. Penguins 1-0.
17:02: Crosby works it into the middle and directs a backhander on net that Biron shuffles away.
15:44: Jeff Carter throws a shot at the net. It hits behind the net but richochets out in front of the cage. Knuble tries to follow up on it but can't get a clean shot off.
14:42: Jarkko Ruutu checks a Flyer into the corner. "Ruuuuuuuuuuuuu...."
14:33: Scott Hartnell dishes a puck into the slot. Richards tries to chop it on net. Marc-Andre Fleury easily covers it.
14:24: Brooks Orpik throws Hartnell into the boards with a hard check.
12:26: Malone rips a wrister from the slot. Biron makes a fine save on it with his right leg.
11:09: During a commercial break, Gary Roberts' destruction of Ben Eager just happened to be shown on the Jumbotron:
10:40: While trying to steal the puck, Hossa runs over Timonen.
10:10: Malone takes the puck behind the Flyers' net. He drives it to the right side and gets Derian Hatcher to follow him. Malone bangs it off the boards and leaves it for Evgeni Malkin. Malkin grabs it and very quickly is able to jam it by Biron's left foot. The "Hey Song" is played. Penguins 2, Flyers 1975.
9:01: "Marrrrr-Teeeeee.... Marrrrrr-Teeeeee....."
8:45: Fleury tries to play a puck behind his net and Hartnell trips him up. Two minutes.
7:28: Malkin has a chance at an open net from a tough angle in the left corner but hits the side of the cage.
6:15: Adam Hall leads a rush with some open ice. Fans cheer but they clam up when they realize it's... Adam Hall leading a rush.
4:11: Ruutu absolutely hammers Jason Smith in the corner. The hit is so spectacular, people don't even "Ruuuuuuuu....." They just roar.
3:23: "Marrrrr-Teeeeeee.... Marrrr-Teeeeee"
2:27: Hatcher tries to get rough with some of the Penguins. Georges Laraque challenges him to fight. Hatcher might be slow, old, useless, ugly, behind on his taxes and lactose-intolerrant. But he's not stupid.
2:18: Ryan Whitney is sent off for hooking. The Flyers could use a goal here.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 2, Flyers 1975.
-As the teams skate to their locker rooms, Biron tries to get at Ruutu to tell him the best way to navigate the Dardanelles. We think. Seriously, Biron should've been given a penalty for that. With all 20 players on the ice, that could've escalated into something of "Slap Shot" proportions.
-Malone was given a high sticking penalty at the end of the period.
-The Penguins are out-shooting the Flyers, 10-5.
-They're also up in faceoffs, 13-7.
-Vaclav Prospal and Ryan Parent each have three blocked shots already.
-Best text message sent to the Jumbotron:
"Standard Text Messaging Rates Don't Apply to Gary Roberts."
19:41: Joffrey Lupul gets a shot on net. Fleury kicks it out.
16:21: Daniel Briere sneaks a wrister on net through traffic. Fleury locates it and kicks it out.
14:35: EN reader Gareth Langley of Southampton, U.K. has access to the CBC broadcast and wrote in the following exchange to us:
CBC: "(Ryan) Malone, what happened with Biron at the end of the period?"
Malone: "I just told him he should hold onto his stick. He's a better goalie with his stick in his hands."
CBC (Laughing): "You actually said that?"
Malone: "Aren't most goalies better with their sticks in their hands?"
11:36: Crosby circles in the corner with the puck and dishes it to Hossa in the right faceoff circle. Hossa releases a shot almost as soon as the puck touches his stick. The shot beats Biron. They "Hey Song" is played. Penguins 3, Flyers 1975.
10:58: Malkin and R.J. Umberger get tangled up during a stoppage. Malkin tries to put a sleeper hold on Umberger. Both teams scrum at the Flyers blueline. Malkin, Umberger and Hal Gill are sent off for roughing. the Flyers will have a five-on-four power play.
10:52: Right the faceoff, Timmonen trips up Staal by the Flyers' net. Two minutes. We'll have four-on-four for 1:52:
10:28: Sergei Gonchar fires a slapper from the point. Biron eats it up. "Marrrrr-Teeeeeeee.... Marrrrrr-Teeeee...."
9:56: Brooks Orpik gets his Bobby Orrpik on as he leads a rush through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone. He dishes a pass to Malone and drives to the net. Malone fires a wrister that Biron kicks out.
8:32: Carter trips up Malkin. Two minutes. Time to bury this team.
8:18: Gonchar takes the puck at the top of the slot and ropes a wrister towards the net. It hits a body and bounces by Biron. Crosby gets credit for the goal. Malone gets an assist. This is getting ugly. The "Hey Song" is played. Penguins 4, Flyers 1975.
7:46: "Marrrr-Teeeeeee... Marrrrr-Teeeeee...."
6:53: This might be the earliest we've ever heard this chant: "Go-Home Fly-Errrs, Go-Home Fly-Errrrs."
6:12: Scottie Upshall tris to get something going for the Flyers. He weaves through the Penguins defense and gets behind the defenseman. Rob Scuderi catches up with him and pokes the puck away before Upshall can get a shot off.
4:41: Orpik dumps Lupul in the corner with a check.
4:19: Malone has been credited with the fourth goal.
3:32: Kris Letang comes down the right side and fires a slapper on net. Biron eats it up.
3:05: Malone tries for the hat trick as goes for the wraparound. Biron says no.
2:51: Knuble fires a one-timer from the right side. Fleury kicks it away with a "thud."
0:57: Max Talbot takes the puck from behind the net and forces it into the slot. Staal jumps on it and bangs it by Biron. This is getting brutal. The "He Song" is played. The "Hey Song" YouTube clip is getting worn out. Penguins 5, Flyers 1975.
0:04: The Flyers try to get on the scoreboard but the officials say no. A puck is played into the crease of the Penguins' net. Patrick Thoresen crashes the crease and appears to run into Fleury. The puck goes into the net. The red lamp goes off. An official immediately waves his hands calling off the goal.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 5, Flyers 1975.
-Do the Flyers consider pulling Biron here to spare him embarrassment? His defense has abandoned him.
-The Penguins have a 19-13 advantage in shots.
-They also lead in faceoffs, 23-18.
-Overheard in the press box:
"You can tell they don't have any (expletive) heart, they're down (expletive), 5-0."
-You can credit that to a certain anonymous Penguins broadcaster who gets excited about Gary Roberts' preference for Fiji Water.
-Best text message sent to the Jumbotron:
"Gary Roberts 1, Pneumonia 0."
-Biron will start the third period.
-In 20 minutes, the Penguins will not be touching the Prince of Wales Trophy (it's bad luck) and heading to the Stanley Cup final.
17:09: Can anyone confirm if a Petr Sykora injury was reported via television? We haven't heard one word about it in the press box. Adam Hall is skating on a line with Malkin and Malone.
15:57: Pascal Dupuis dishes a pass to Hossa at the Flyers blue line. Dupuis drives to the net. Hossa fires it on net. The puck appears to hit a body or two and beats Biron on the glove side. The "Hey Song" is played. Penguins 6, Flyers 1975.
14:32: Fleury made a save. We'd detail it better but NBC can't be bothered to show a replay.
13:34: "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye."
13:13: Dupuis was credited with the sixth goal.
12:50: "Marrrrr-Teeeeee.... Marrrrrr-Teeeeee....."
11:05: EN reader Eric Groft writes:
"NBC reported that Fleury was denied a chance to make a save due to contact. Also no report of injury to Sykora, but a note that he left the ice after the fourth goal with the implied relation to the bug going around the Pens' locker room."
10:15: "Gooo-Home Fly-Errrrs. Gooo-Home Fly-Errrss."
9:46: "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye."
8:58: The Pengiuns are seemingly trying to get everyone on the scoresheet. Rob Scuderi rings a shot off the post from the point.
7:03: "Flerrr-Eeee! Flerrr-Eeee!"
6:04: His team is up by six goals and Fleury is showing more heart still than the entire Flyers team combined. Knuble comes up ice on a two-on-one against Letang. He dishes a pass to Carter. Carter has the net wide open. Fleury is able to slide over and make an amazing save denying Carter. He wants that goose egg.
5:45: Cotton-Eyed Joe is busted out:
4:57: Hall and Lupul get tangled up near the penalty boxes. Lupul just looks like someone who wants to get in bed and pull the covers ove his head.
4:48: "We Want The Cup! We Want The Cup" That's a little early for that chant folks.
4:28: There's less than two minutes left in a blow out win, and very few seats are empty here.
4:02: Staal fires a shot from the slot. Biron denies him.
3:01: Crosby shoots a wrister. Biron shuffles it away.
2:17: "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye."
1:40: Hall is sent off for hooking.
1:03: Timonen throws a shot on net from the slot. Fleury eats it up.
1:00: Public address announcer John Barbaro announced that there is one minute remaining in the period, Mellon Arena explodes.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 6, Flyers 1975.
-The goal horn goes off for the longest time we've ever heard it. "Song 2" by Blur plays:
-Confetti rains down on the stands.
-The teams shake hands
-NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly presents the Prince of Wales Trophy to Sidney Crosby
-Crosby doesn't even touch it. Smart move.
-The feeling among many people here is that the Stanley Cup final would start Saturday should Detroit win tomorrow.
-We went to roughly 15 games in the 2003-04 season with our friends and pretty much did the student rush thing every time. We could show up 10 minutes before a game and get a C level seat for $20. They didn't even ask for our student identification. The Penguins were just happy to get rid of the ticket and make some profit on it. Most nights, there were barely 12,000 souls in the stands that season. The team was awful. Dick Tarnstrom was the leading scorer. Most people in this town had never heard of Sidney Crosby. The future of the franchise was uncertain. Rumors of relocation were constant. It was a tough team to invest your emotions into.
-It's absolutely mind blowing to us to know that was only four years ago. We just saw this team get into the Stanley Cup final.
-Ryan Malone, Brooks Orpik, Rob Scuderi and Marc-Andre Fleury are the only members of the 2003-04 still playing with the franchise.
-The Penguins out-shot the Flyers, 25-21.
-They also controlled faceoffs, 30-23.
-Here's one of the conference championship hats they gave to the players:
(Lose that red and blue and you have a decent hat.)
-That's hardly official though.
-Malone led all skaters with seven shots.
-Orpik was tops with four shots on goal.
-The only Penguins skaters to not get on the scoresheet were Hal Gill, Rob Scuderi, Petr Sykora, Ryan Whitney, Jarkko Ruutu, Tyler Kennedy and Kris Letang.
-Fleury is now tops in the playoffs with three shutouts.
-Crosby now leads the playoffs with 21 points. Malkin has 19 points and is tied for second with Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg.
-Lord knows how we overlooked this, but:
-A few photos from the Yahoo! photo wire:
(We guess if you own the team, you can keep your old locker.)
