Take a Father to School Day is on May 17, but the debate over how to handle the event, now in its 15th year, took place tonight at the Pittsburgh Public Schools board meeting where expenses associated with the day were approved.
The board spent more than an hour, with many questions from board member Theresa Colaizzi, on discussion about a $45,500 grant from the Heinz Endowments to support the day and related activities to encourage male volunteerism in the district.
The expenses include hiring Brandon Phillips and M. Hubbard El as well as various expenses, including a cookout, videography, KQV advertising and Pirates tickets, six of which would be made available to each school.
Take a Father to School Day is the brainchild of school board member Mark Brentley Sr.
Board member Regina Holley praised the program.
Ms. Colaizzi voted no on the expenditures. Board member Floyd "Skip" McCrea abstained. Board member Sherry Hazuda abstained or voted no on the items.
