Four middle schools from the region have qualified for championship rounds of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Science Bowl for middle schools. The preliminary rounds were held Saturday at the South Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County.

The final rounds of competition are set March 12 at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory in South Park.

The winning teams that will compete in the championship rounds are:

Marshall Middle School Team 1, Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy, Ingomar Middle School Team 1, and Dorseyville Middle School Team 1. Each will receive funds ranging from $400 to $1,000. The team that wins the regional championship will compete in the National Science Bowl set for April 25 to 29.

Four teams were also selected Saturday to receive "civility awards" for good sportsmanship: Greensburg Central Catholic Middle School Team 2, Winchester Thurston School Team 2, Chartiers Valley Middle School Team 1, and Logan Middle School Team 2.

The National Science Bowl is an academic competition featuring a question-and-answer format similar to the TV show "Jeopardy." Topics cover math, physical science, life science, energy, earth and space, and general science.
