The Robert Morris University campus in Moon has canceled afternoon and evening classes because of a widespread power outage, a school spokesman said.

Duquesne Light Co. crews aren't expected to restore power until late afternoon or early evening, said company spokeswoman Joe Vallarian. Some spots in the periphery beyond campus also may be experiencing outages, including university offices near a shopping center across the street.

Mr. Vallarian said a tree fell late this morning, creating a sort of "chain reaction" that downed six wires.

"That's not a fast fix," he said.

Campus residence halls -- except one which is part of the Holiday Inn, nearly a mile away -- also appear to be affected and are running on emergency power, said university spokesman Jonathan Potts. About 1,800 students live on campus.

The university plans to continue serving cold food, he said.
